Powered Anode Rod – Getting Rid of Smelly Water/rotten egg smell in your water heater

It is the gas that dissolves in water that causes the water to smell like spoiled eggs. Though the smell is bad, the bacteria in the water are not hazardous to your health. The chemical reaction between your water, which often contains high levels of magnesium, and the magnesium anode rod in the water heater tank is also a common cause of this problem. You may be able to stop the chemical reaction by removing the anode rod. However, we don't recommend you do that because the water heater will not have any corrosion protection. The water heater will corrode faster and cost you much more to replace when it breaks.
